For this sustainability brief I decided to design for a sustainability issue rather than focusing on using sustainable materials: More specifically I have designed for fruit packaging. My main inspiration for this was seeing Studio 8 fold’s ‘Wasteline’ installation at London Design Festival at the start of the project. I feel like this is a very important issue to address more so now than ever. It doesn’t seem logical that something so organic and natural is then suffocated in plastic.

I wanted to design a closed loop system to replace plastic and polystyrene and instead create a reusable carrier that can be used time and time again that also has aesthetic appeal. I combined the visual aesthetic of sportswear with the element of protection which is what packaging is ultimately for. I used elastic so the knit fits snugly around different shapes and with stretch means it fits different sizes. So the carrier could in theory be adaptable for different fruits. The use of the tuck stitch provides tiny cushioned pockets to protect which is also the same for the filled knit, which is filled with waste knitting, instead of foam which is very unsustainable.

Having the element of sustainability in the project really challenged me and got me considering every aspect of the design process, from materials, design, structures and purpose. It’s completely changed the way I design and think.
